The Descent of Dissent? We can only hope!
Wow, two postings in one day!
Dad29 reports that the pro-Gay (marriage) diatribe of Fr. Bryan Massingale scheduled for tonight at St. John Vianney Congregational Reductionist Church in Brookfield was abruptly cancelled.
Here are some possible explanations:
1. The check for the speaking fee was not ready. No check, no dissent.
2. Someone on south Lake Drive grew a spine and took some action. (What orthodox priest at the Cousins Center calls St. John Vianney his home parish?)
3. Fr. Massingale got a better offer from St. Matthias, St. Sebastian, Our Lady of Lourdes, etc. etc., etc.
4. Someone had a date tonight.
You be the judge.

The Rev. Len VV (former male servant) to "his grace" and current pastor of SJV once again misjudged the level of moral and theological understanding of his parish members and then had to back down when the protests came. This also happened when LVV told his people that Weakland would be out to confirm their children. When they said absolutely not, LVV fired back "His people forgave him his sins." Unfortunately for LVV, the ploy did not work and Weakland remains a persona no grata in Brookfield. Masingale will have many other "gay friendly" sites at which to deliver his message of love.
Well, we knew it could not be #2. What the bishops and priests don't get here and elsewhere, the FAITHFUL do. God bless the vigilant people of SJV.
Or, perhaps it was the threats to safety that caused the cancelation. Where does Jesus say that we should handle disagreement with threats of violence? That doesn't sound like the Catholic way!
"Threats to safety" Now that is new to me. Where did you hear about anything like that? Come anon, put up!
Hi Mike!
I am connected to the situation and I wish I could say more. The Office of Communications for the Archdiocese and the Catholic Herald might be able to provide more information, although I doubt that they will.
I am just so saddened that some people think that threats are the way to go.
P.S. I am a faithful reader of your blog, I don't always agree, but I appreciate that the site is not "nasty". Good food for thought.
I would like to be public, but I like my job!!
Mike, I heard the same sort of thing--that there were nasty and (perhaps) threatening phone calls made both to SJV and the Chancery.
Usually I take those rumors with a large grain of salt. Typically they come from the same people who tell you that "You're the ONLY PARENT who objects to this SexEd program!!"
I can tell you that some heavyweight Parish members did express their unhappiness (in a civilized fashion) to Fr Len V. (AKA "Vlad") and the cancellation happened.
By NO COINCIDENCE, the Archbishop of Milwaukee requested and got an interview on the air today with Jay Weber (WISN) wherein he re-stated, clearly, his (and Madison, Superior, Green Bay, and LaCrosse's) support of The Amendment.
The closest thing to a "threat" I've ever heard of in an analogous situation was Archbishop Dolan threatening to ask for Father David Cooper's resignation unless Cooper publicly pretended to withdraw his endorsement of women's ordination.
Come to think of it, Abp. Weakland was threatened by some homeless type carrying a roll of paper towels outside the Seminary grounds....
More threats to the clergy.
